English Language Arts instruction at CCSP is based on a balanced literacy approach. Student learning includes the core elements as recommended by the National Reading Panel Report:
- Phonemic Awareness
In grades K-3, students engage in daily language work from the Fundations Component of the Wilson Language Program. Fundations lessons follow a research based trajectory with proven results in preventing reading difficulties by ensuring mastery of foundational reading skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding and fluency. Students in grades 4 through 8, receive reading intervention using the Just Words Wilson Language program. Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop provides literacy instruction using a variety of authentic reading materials. Each lesson launch begins with modeling of reading comprehension or writing strategies, followed by an ample time for students to practice each strategy with guided support.
